Thrombolytic medicines are approved for the emergency treatment of stroke and heart attack the most commonly used drug for thrombolytic therapy is tissue plasminogen activator tpa but other drugs can do the same thing. Tissue plasminogen activator is a protein encoded by the plat gene which is located on chromosome 8 the primary transcript produced by this gene undergoes alternative splicing producing three distinct messenger rnas . Clinical practice guidelines published by both the american heart association and american stroke association aha asa in 2007 and the american college of chest physicians in 2008 recommend the use of the thrombolytic agent recombinant tissue plasminogen activator rtpa for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke ais in eligible patients 1 2.
